Live Music: Little Dipper
Little Dipper – Northern Michigan’s Premier ’90s Country Revivalists.
Born from a shared love of twang, tight harmonies, and the golden age of country music, Little Dipper brings the sound of the ’90s roaring back to life with honky-tonk swagger and a knowing wink. Hailing from the backroads and beer joints of Northern Michigan, this band of seasoned musicians isn’t just playing the hits—they’re living them. The lineup includes: Aaron Dye, whose work with StoneFolk continues to make waves in the Michigan folk-rock scene, plays the heartbreak machine (pedal steel). Mark Goike, a true utility knife of a drummer, keeps the train rolling with precision and groove, splitting his time between Little Dipper and holding down the beat for local jazz artist Robert Abate. James Hart, a staple of the state’s live music circuit and a driving force behind the cover supergroup The Daylites, demonstrates that he has friends in low places, those friends being the notes ringing from his bass guitar. Mike Leasia and Tom O’Brien, a duo forged in the fire of Hot n Bothered (Traverse City's favorite old time band), handle the keys and guitar respectively, the latter gaining notice in the boundary-pushing indie-pop-bossanova group Metal Bubble Trio. Rounding out the lineup is Jonathan Timm, singer/songwriter/fiddler who saw the light and now dedicates himself to reviving the era when country music truly peaked.
From boot-stomping anthems to heartstring-pulling ballads, Little Dipper delivers the songs you grew up loving—played the way they were meant to be played. Whether it's an Alan Jackson shuffle, a Shania-style singalong, or the deep cuts only the true fans remember, Little Dipper is here to bring back the soundtrack of pickup trucks, neon lights, and Saturday nights gone sideways.
For lovers of steel guitar, story songs, and the kind of country that still had a little dirt on its boots, Little Dipper is your band. Saddle up, Michigan—this is the ’90s country revival you didn’t know you needed
